How the sessions work

Helping the wider industry navigate the grid connection landscape is central to what Roadnight Taylor does. Alongside free podcasts, webinars and explainers published through Connectology®, these sessions are part of how we share expertise more directly. These sessions offer a grounded overview from Connectologist® Nikki Pillinger of how the grid connection process works, whether a team is new to grid connections or looking to strengthen their understanding of a specific part of the process.

  • Sessions are 90 minutes and run via Teams or Zoom, with slide decks and recordings issued afterwards.
  • Each session is £1,000, payable in advance and can be delivered to groups of any size.
  • There are seven sessions available, offering a structured progression through the key stages of grid connections, from network fundamentals through to construction, commissioning and post-energisation. They start with ‘Introduction to electrical networks’, with the client choosing whether to continue with further titles from there.
  • These are informal knowledge sessions. They do not carry formal accreditation or CPD certification.

Your trainer – Nikki Pillinger

Nikki Pillinger delivers these sessions. She has with experience spanning:

  • MSc in Energy Policy from the University of Exeter, with 11 years in the energy industry, eight as a grid connection specialist
  • Lectures at the Centre for Alternative Technology
  • Headed up the grid connections function at GRIDSERVE and British Solar Renewables solar and storage projects
  • Sits on several DNO connections steering groups and contributes to CUSC consultations
  • Co-Chairs Regen’s Grid Connections Working Group and sits on their Electricity Market Arrangements Working Group
  • Sits on the Solar Energy UK Grid Steering Group
  • A mentor for Regen’s ReWire Network

Seven sessions offering progression through the key stages of grid connections

  • Introduction to electrical networks — an overview of network infrastructure and components, and basic electrical terminology

  • The transmission works assessment process — an overview of the transmission works assessment process, timescales and nuances

  • Getting through detailed design — getting your project connection ready and working through the caveats and risks hidden in grid offers

  • Post energisation — the management and engagement with the DNO required post energisation

  • ICP tendering and works — selecting the right ICP and understanding the processes and interactions with stakeholders

  • Finance, including securities and liabilities — understanding the financial aspects of a project, from the risks around connection costs to the liabilities that may be applicable

  • Construction and commissioning — understanding your grid process and the complex interactions between all your stakeholders
